Gun violence cut a bloody swath through progressive cities over the Labor Day weekend, leaving dozens of people shot in New York, Chicago and Philadelphia, including at least 16 fatally.
Police in the Windy City reported at least 44 people shot and seven killed between Friday night and Sunday night.
Just as the holiday weekend was getting underway, a 24-year-old man was shot multiple times in the back by several gunmen who ambushed him while he was standing on the sidewalk in the West Garfield Park section at around 6:30 p.m., ABC 7 Chicago reported.
Later on Friday, a 15-year-old boy was walking in South Chicago when he was accosted by four men, who fired nearly 45 rounds at him, with two of the bullets striking the teen in the back. He was hospitalized in critical condition.
Shortly after midnight on Saturday, Garvis Jones, 31, was shot in the chest on the city’s North Side and later died at a local hospital, police reported.

In one incident, four men were shot on South Kingston Avenue, and two later died. WLS-TVThree hours later, a 22-year-old man was found riddled with bullets in the 600 block of South Racine Avenue. The victim was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Just before 4 p.m. on Saturday, 28-year-old Theatus White was in an argument at a gas station in the Pullman neighborhood when the other person pulled a handgun from a fanny pack and fatally shot him, police said.
At around 11:15 p.m. that night, a 29-year-old victim died from gunshot wounds to the neck and arm after getting into an argument inside a home in the West Woodlawn section at around 11:15 p.m., according to cops.
The violence in the Second City spilled into Sunday, when two men, ages 37 and 40, were critically wounded in a shooting that took place after midnight near East Adams Street and South Wabash Avenue.

WLS-TVJust over an hour later, a 13-year-old boy was walking in the 700 block of South Kostner Avenue when police said he heard shots and felt pain. He was rushed to a hospital to be treated for gunshot wounds to his left knee.
So far, no arrests have been made in connection with any of the Labor Day weekend shootings.
Meanwhile, in New York City, the NYPD said a Brooklyn shooting left one man dead and two others hurt on the grounds of the public Nostrand Houses on Labor Day — making the victims among seven people shot so far in the five boroughs on the holiday.
Since Friday, a total of at least 22 people had been shot in Gotham, cops said.
In Philadelphia, 27 people have been shot between Friday and early Monday, leaving at least eight dead. WTXF-TVPhiladelphia also saw a flurry of violent shootings over the weekend. In a span of 72 hours, at least 29 people were shot, nine of them fatally, reported Fox 29.
Around 4 a.m. Saturday, two men were gunned down in the Kingsessing section.
Two hours later, a 45-year-old man was shot multiple times and killed in the Hunting Park neighborhood.
Around the same time, police responded to an apartment on Jackson Street and found a 29-year-old woman who had been shot in the face, allegedly by the father of her child.
The victim was hospitalized in critical condition, while the suspect was reportedly detained.
Four other shootings took place in the morning hours in various sections of the city, leaving four men, ranging in age from 26 to 41, with a slew of injuries.
Sunday in Philadelphia proved just as violent as Saturday, beginning with the death of a 35-year-old man who was shot in the 800 block of Willard Drive.
At around 1:45 p.m., a 19-year-old man was killed in an apparent road rage incident after getting into an argument with someone at the drive-through of a chicken eatery in West Philadelphia.
Later that day, a 22-year-old was shot in the back in the Wissinoming section and was hospitalized in stable condition.
At around 7:30 p.m., a 17-year-old was shot four times in West Philadelphia, while a 23-year-old was struck by gunfire again in Wissinoming. Both were in critical condition.
Two hours later, multiple gunmen emerged from a vehicle outside a corner bodega in South Philadelphia and opened fire, killing a 37-year-old man standing on the sidewalk. Police said at least 30 shell casings were recovered from the scene.
Even more bloodshed took place early Monday, when five people were shot in North Philadelphia at 1 a.m., leaving a woman dead.

Rob Grabowski/Invision/APAccording to the latest available crime statistics, as of Sunday, the City of Brotherly Love has logged 364 homicides, and there have been 2,440 shootings as of Aug. 28. Those numbers do not take into account the shootings that occurred overnight into Monday.
For comparison, a record 562 people were killed in the city last year.
During a press conference in July, Philadelphia Mayor Kenney, a Democrat who was elected in 2015, was so exasperated while addressing a shooting during a free concert that left two police officers wounded that he admitted that he was looking forward to leaving office.
“I don’t enjoy the Fourth of July, I don’t enjoy the Democratic National Convention, I didn’t enjoy the NFL draft — I’m waiting for something bad to happen all the time,” he said. “So I’ll be happy when I’m not here — when I’m not mayor and I can enjoy some stuff.”
This latest wave of gun violence comes as the Philadelphia Police Department is bracing for an acute staffing shortage due to hundreds of upcoming retirements.
In the next four years, up to 800 officers could leave the force, according to a police union chief.
The Philadelphia Inquirer has reported that the police department is currently operating at 20% below its targeted staffing level following the departures of more than 800 officers between 2020-2022 — and the exodus is expected to continue.
Meanwhile in Chicago, Mayor Lori Lightfoot, a Democrat, has famously pledged to slash $80 million from the city’s police budget during nationwide protests and calls to defund the police that swept the US in 2020 in the wake of George Floyd’s murder.
A year later, as Chicago and other major progressive cities were struggling with a deadly crime wave, Lightfoot appealed to the federal government to send agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to help rid Chicago of illegal guns, reported Fox News Digital.
“We cannot continue to endure the level of violence that we are now experiencing,” Lightfoot said in a speech in Dec. 2021. “I feel the urgency every day.”
On Monday officials in Prince George’s County in ultra-liberal Maryland announced a 30-day curfew for anyone 17 years old or younger. The county has seen a surge in homicides and also juvenile arrests, many for alleged carjackings.
Starting Friday, youth in the county will need to be home by 10 p.m. on weekdays and 11:59 p.m. on weekends, County Executive Angela Alsobrooks said.
“At this point, these kids don’t just need a hug, they need to be held accountable,” Alsobrooks said at a press conference announcing the curfew, according to WTOP.
“I know it’s not a popular thing to say, but it’s a fair question: Where are their parents? Where are the aunties, where are the uncles and other family members who are responsible for them?”
