Photos and video from the Bahamas reveal the staggering damage caused by Hurricane Dorian, with cars thrown around like toys, homes ripped apart and whole swaths of the archipelago inundated by storm surges.
Photos show children desperately trying to reach safety through waist-deep floodwaters, including a young girl clutching a puppy and a couple sloshing down a flooded roadway.
Crowds are seen desperately collecting needed supplies at emergency centers, and one aerial image shows a marina destroyed by Dorian’s hurricane-force winds — dozens of boats are seen smashed after being thrown onto land.
And new video captured by ABC News in the Abaco Islands shows a group of six people trying to make their way out of a flooded area during a lull in the storm as its eye passed over Sunday.
“Things had calmed down and we were able to go outside for the first time, and started seeing people coming out of homes that had been destroyed in the area,” ABC correspondent Marcus Moore said Monday on “Good Morning America.”
But then he spotted a man, three women and two teenage girls struggling against the current.
“Swim! Swim! Swim!” Moore and his crew can be heard calling out to the group on the video.
An ABC producer handed the group a rope to help them make their way out, the clip shows.
“We could hear them screaming and our producer — he was separated from them by this rushing, this torrent of water — he had to swim,” Moore recalled. “Because it was really a race against time, because we were in the eye of the storm. So it was calm, but we knew that within minutes that the rest of the storm would come through and it would be intense once again.”
The group eventually made their way to safety, visibly shaken as they stepped over weeds and branches.
“Moments after that they went to a bunker, a safe area that’s been set up here at the resort,” Moore said on the show. “And my crew and I, we stayed in the three-story condo building where we rode out the rest of the storm.”
Other images from the storm in the Bahamas show people wading through the waist-high waters, one of them a young woman carrying two dogs.
Hurricane Dorian pounded the Bahamas as a Category 5 storm, killing at least five people.
It has since been downgraded to Category 2 — but still poses a threat to the US, where it is expected to hit late Tuesday.
