The family of Henri Paul, the man driving Princess Diana’s Mercedes when it smashed into a pillar in a Paris tunnel, yesterday welcomed the news that officials are looking into the claim that a secretive military unit “arranged’’ the fatal accident.

Paul’s mother, Gisele, told Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper, “We believe there was a plot to kill the princess that terrible night in August 1997.’’

The 83-year-old mom added, “We know in our hearts that our son was murdered, and we still live with the hope that one day the truth will be known.’’

Also killed in the smash-up was Diana’s companion, Dodi Fayed, whose father told the Mail he believed that police would investigate the claim “with vigor.’’

The Post reported yesterday that Alan Power, author of the “Princess Diana Conspiracy,’’ believes that a British intelligence unit called The Increment caused the crash by shining a strobe light into Paul’s eyes from another vehicle in the tunnel.

The motive for the murder, he said, was to keep Diana from revealing embarrassing sexual details about Prince Charles.
