The Dutch family that lived on a secluded farm for nearly a decade waiting for doomsday were likely held there against their will, according to authorities, who announced that the clan’s father was taken into custody this week.
Authorities probing the bizarre domestic situation — in which a father and his five adult children were discovered hunkered down on the the out-of-the-way farm in the rural province of Drenthe on Sunday — believe that the family did not freely choose to stay there.
“We have reasons to suspect that the six persons involved did not stay in the house … of their own free will,” authorities said in a Dutch-language press release Thursday. “We are investigating whether a certain religion or philosophy forms the cause of their living situation.”
Meanwhile, a second suspect was arrested Thursday in connection with the family’s nine-year stay on the property — a 67-year-old man who police believe is the father of the adult children, police said.
The adult children are not registered in the Netherlands’ personal records database — and police will continue to investigate their exact relationship, authorities said.
Austrian carpenter Josef Brunner, 58, has previously been arrested for allegedly keeping the family locked inside the remote property.
Both men have been charged with unlawful deprivation of liberty, “abuse, in the sense of prejudicing the health of others,” and money laundering, according to authorities.

The family’s outlandish living arrangement was discovered when the eldest of the young adults, Jan Zon van Dorsten, 25, turned up at a pub in Ruinerworld.
At the bar, he ordered and downed five ales — and then asked for help, according to initial reports.
In the months before he came forward about his living situation, Jan posted sporadically on social media, reports said.
“We understand that many questions exist,” police said of the ongoing investigation. “We are thoroughly investigating the matter in order to be able to answer as many of these questions — held by us, as well — as possible.”
