An asteroid due to pass by Earth at a record-close distance won’t flatten any cities — but it could take out your phone service.

The 150-foot-wide space rock will be just 17,200 miles away when it whizzes past Earth Friday, and scientists fear it could hit one of the more than 100 communications and weather satellites orbiting the planet.
