Tesla founder and Twitter owner Elon Musk has thrown his support behind Rep. Kevin McCarthy — as the California lawmaker’s bid to become House speaker has been stymied by a group of roughly 20 hardline conservatives.

“Kevin McCarthy should be Speaker,” the billionaire tech titan tweeted early Thursday, garnering almost 40,000 likes within hours.

McCarthy has so far lost six votes in the House — three on Tuesday and three more Wednesday — before the chamber adjourned Wednesday evening, preventing a seventh ballot. 

The House will reconvene around noon Thursday. ​

McCarthy’s desire has run headlong into a contingent of Republicans in the “Never Kevin” camp who staunchly oppose his becoming speaker as they seek a number of concessions, including lowering the number of members needed to remove a speaker.

Musk, who has said he wants to restore free speech to Twitter, has aligned himself with a group of about 200 Republicans, including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), who have consistently backed McCarthy in the two days of voting. 

McCarthy came to Musk’s defense in November when the White House said they were “keeping an eye on” his Twitter reforms. 

Asked about the comments made by White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, McCarthy said they were “offensive.”

“Government’s going to go after someone who wants to have free speech? What do they have to look at Twitter about? Do they want to go more after the American public about whether they can have an opinion on something?” McCarthy asked.

“I think the American public have spoken on this. I think our First Amendment stands up and I think they should stop picking on Elon Musk,” he said. 

Musk, since last month, has been releasing internal Twitter documents shedding light on how former top executives at the company debated and ultimately decided to block The Post’s blockbuster reporting on first son Hunter Biden’s overseas business dealings in October 2020.
