The dystopic science-fiction thriller “Elysium” topped the weekend box office with $30.5 million, according to studio estimates yesterday, enough to beat three newcomers.

In second was the R-rated comedy “We’re the Millers,” starring Jennifer Aniston, which took in $26.6 million over the weekend. The “Cars” spinoff “Planes” opened in third with $22.5 million. “Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters” came in fourth with $14.6 million.
