The “dangerous” convicts who escaped from an upstate prison are likely heading to Canada — and could be just hours away from the border.

DNA belonging to Richard Matt was found in a cabin in Malone, NY, which is only about 11 miles south of the Canadian border, the Press Republican reported. There’s also evidence they’d been to a field site in Malone, authorities said.

Matt and David Sweat left some “basic items” at the Monroe cabin and took other supplies with them, state police said, without offering specifics.

Officials added they’re heading north-northwest — and Canadian authorities are forming a “picket line” to ensure Matt and Sweat don’t make it across the border.

“We have no reason to believe they are in Canada yet,” State Police Troop B commander Major Charles Guess said, adding that they believe the men are mostly on the move at night.

Authorities were scouring the towns of Malone and Constable in search of the convicted murderers, who escaped from Clinton Correctional Facility on June 6. Their DNA was also found in a hunting camp in Mountain View — about 13 miles south of Malone — last week.

Donald Silver lives in the area that authorities were searching overnight — and said they were trying to stop the convicts from moving north.

“They were there all night, from yesterday afternoon, evening. They didn’t leave here until about 7 o’clock this morning,” Silver told the Press-Republican on Friday.

“They told me they’re trying to control them from moving any further north. There’s a lot of woods here. They can sneak through pretty easily.”

Silver believes the convicts are using camps in the area to stock up on supplies as they make their way through thick woods.

“You know, there’s so many camps here,” he said. “In these camps, there’s a lot of extra clothes; they’ll probably have rainwear stored inside that (the escapees) could take.”
