FAIRFAX, Va. — A former Fairfax County police officer is scheduled to make his first appearance in court after being charged with murder in the 2013 shooting death of an unarmed Springfield man.

Adam Torres is scheduled for an arraignment and bond hearing Wednesday on charges that he wrongfully shot and killed 46-year-old John Geer in a standoff triggered by a call about a domestic dispute.

Torres was indicted Monday, two years after the shooting. Geer’s family criticized the county for stonewalling the investigation, and the long delay prompted congressional scrutiny of the police department’s actions.

The county paid $3 million earlier this year to settle a civil lawsuit filed by Geer’s family.

Both Torres and Geer are white, according to police. Race has not been raised as a factor in the shooting.
