A former Cub Scouts leader from Arkansas was arrested on charges stemming from an alleged relationship with a teenage pack member whose parents claim she groomed the boy.
Christina McCafferty, 38, of West Memphis, was charged Saturday with sexual indecency with a child and computer child pornography, according to Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. The charges come three months after she was dismissed as a “den mother” from the Cub Scouts pack.
Police said McCafferty had an inappropriate relationship with a 15-year-old boy, who she would allegedly call and video chat outside of pack meetings.
The victim’s parents contacted the Boy Scouts of America and police after discovering McCafferty had been secretly contacting their son.
“The pattern of behavior that eventually became apparent was one of very carefully calculated decisions to influence, befriend and eventually seduce a child under her supervision,” the victim’s parents told news station WREG. “Examples of this include, among other things, secretly providing our child with multiple portable devices, which could be used to contact him without our knowledge.”
It is unclear if the relationship was physical.
A man who trained for the scouts with McCafferty said that he believes she was using her position in the Boy Scouts to find vulnerable children.
“At the time I thought she was trying to help. At the time she told me this boy comes from a single-parent household,” the man who declined to be identified told WREG. “She was sending messages trying to work her way into something physical or sexual.”
McCafferty is being held in the Crittenden County jail on $35,000 bond. Her next court appearance is scheduled for July 31.
