A former Kansas cop accused of sexually assaulting numerous black women and girls over his decades-long career killed himself on the morning his explosive trial was set to start, according to reports.

Roger Golubski, 71, was founded dead on the back porch of his Edwardsville home on Monday morning, according to CNN, with investigators ruling out any foul play and declaring his death a suicide.

The former Kansas City detective, who was found with a fatal gunshot wound, was due in a Topeka courtroom Monday for the start of jury selection — but he failed to show up and hadn’t been heard from. 

After news of his death reached the court, US District Judge Toby Crouse dismissed the case at the prosecution’s request.

Golubski’s attorney said Monday that his client had been “despondent about the media coverage” leading up to the trial.

Golubski faced six felony counts of violating women’s civil rights, which included allegations of rape, kidnap, and sex-trafficking that went back decades.

Most of his alleged victims were black women from crime-ridden, low income neighborhoods, and some were middle school-aged girls when he allegedly used his position of power to rape them. He was also accused of terrorizing his victims with death threats to get what he wanted.

In one alleged incident, prosecutors said Golubski drove a young girl to a cemetery and forced her to dig her own grave, then raped her. The alleged victim reportedly suffered a miscarriage from the attack.

Another incident involved a mother who said Golubski leveraged the arrests of her teenage sons to coerce her into sex – a tactic prosecutors say was a common method in his predatory behavior.

About 50 people had gathered outside the courthouse Monday carrying signs reading “Justice Now” – and many were left outraged that Golubski seemed to escape the law, and demanded the investigation into the allegations continue.

“The community was looking forward to justice, to a full and public accounting and now that has been denied to them,” said Cheryl Pilate, an attorney representing one of Golubski’s accusers.

The ex-cop’s case was sparked by a string of allegations and lawsuits against him, which prompted prosecutors to launch an extensive re-examination of cases he worked during his 35 years as a cop – with one 1994 double homicide already resulting in an exoneration.

That case involved Lamonte McIntyre, who was accused of two murders within hours of the crimes, even though he had a sound alibi and there was no evidence linking him to the case.

McIntyre’s mother said she had repeatedly refused Golubski’s sexual advances – and in 2014 she submitted an affidavit speculating that her son was targeted because of it. A supposed eyewitness allegedly only implicated McIntyre after Golubski allegedly threatened to take her kids away.

McIntyre was finally released in 2017 after 23 years in jail. He was awarded $12.5 million in damages.

Max Seifert, a former Kansas City cop who went to the police academy with Golubski in 1975, said the department tolerated sexual deviancy and misconduct among officers.

“It’s kind of like a boys will be boys type thing,” Seifert said of an incident where Golubski was caught having sex in his office.

Golubski rose to the rank of captain in Kansas City, before retiring in 2010 to work as a suburban cop for six years.

His case sparked outrage across Kansas City and commanded front-page headlines, with the coverage from one local columnist bringing them a Pulitzer Prize, according to CNN.

Rapper Jay-Z’s social justice non-profit, Team Roc, even took out a full-page Washington Post advertisement calling the case “one of the worst examples of abuse of power in U.S. history.”
