An Army veteran who ran one of the nation’s largest consumer-goods companies is President Obama’s choice to run the troubled Department of Veterans Affairs, according to several reports.

Bob McDonald, 61, rose through the ranks of Procter & Gamble before taking over as CEO, a position he retired from a year ago.

McDonald spent 33 years with the Fortune 500 company.

Obama is expected to officially nominate McDonald as secretary of veterans affairs Monday.

If confirmed by the Senate, McDonald would be challenged with repairing a department that has been rocked by allegations of long patient waiting times at veterans hospitals.
