C. Everett Koop, America’s best-known surgeon general and a tireless campaigner for sex education and against smoking, died yesterday at 96, Dartmouth University’s Geisel School of Medicine announced.

Koop raised the previously low profile of surgeon general during his seven years in the Reagan and George H.W. Bush administrations.,
