Experts are increasingly doubtful that North Korea has destroyed its underground nuclear testing site.
The weak explosions on May 24 at entrances to the Punggye-ri test site deep beneath Mount Mantap did not trigger the internal collapses that would put the site out of commission, a U.S. official told CNN, based on seismic data.
No geology experts or arms inspectors – just a small delegation of foreign journalists – were allowed to monitor the showy detonations.
North Korea removed technical equipment from the tunnel complex before they blew up the entrances, U.S. officials have also confirmed.
Kim Jong Un proclaimed the destruction of Punggye-ri as a goodwill gesture ahead of his on-again, off-again summit meeting with President Trump.
