The family of a North Carolina man who died in a freak accident while playing with his children at the beach will donate all of his organs to patients in need, a report said Monday.

Lee Dingle’s parents told a local news station that their son’s organs will go to 55 people in a “final act of selflessness.”

Dingle was killed last Friday when a giant wave crashed onto him and slammed his head into the sand at the beach where he was playing with three of his children, his wife wrote in a blog post.

The impact broke his neck and deprived him of oxygen for so long that he could not recover, Shannon Dingle wrote.

“If you didn’t know him, I’m sorry. You missed out. As you hear people share stories, you’ll think, ‘no person can be that wonderful,’ but? He really and truly was,” Shannon wrote.

Dingle is survived by Shannon and their six children, four of whom are adopted.
