A fugitive steer on the run since early February could be on the chopping block after it was finally captured Friday.

The runaway was headed for a slaughterhouse in Johnston, R.I., on Feb. 4. when it slipped away and began roaming the town.

As it wandered the town’s neighborhoods for 48 days,it became something of a celebrity, with fans hoping it would be saved from becoming someone’s barbecue.

“Can anyone in Rhode Island put me in contact with the man who caught the runaway steer?,” tweeted Tammi Reiss, the head coach of the University of Rhode Island’s women’s basketball team. “I will pay him for the steer and relocate the steer to the sanctuary!”.

The animal’s owner, Ledyard Lewis, corralled the animal early Friday morning in Johnston. It was brought back to Lewis’s two-century old farm in North Stonington, Connecticut, Johnston Police said.

The animal’s fate from there is unclear, the Providence Journal reported. A petition asking for the steer to be sent to a sanctuary has garnered more than 12,000 signatures. And the owner of a sanctuary in New Jersey has offered to take the animal, but hasn’t gotten a promise yet, the paper reported.

Lewis could not be reached Saturday for comment.
