A man was arrested in northern Mexico for allegedly beating to death his three sons as “revenge” against their mother, prosecutors said Sunday.

The prosecutors’ office in the northern state of Sonora said the unidentified man called his father to confess to killing the boys, ages 3, 7 and 8.

The fatal beatings apparently occurred Saturday in the north-central state of Hidalgo, prosecutors said.

He then fled to Sonora, but the boys’ grandfather called police and he was detained there.

Prosecutors say the man had gotten into an argument with the boys’ mother and killed them “in order to cause her great pain.”

“Apparently in revenge against his wife, he killed his sons,” the office said in a statement.
