The White House’s chief medical advisor credited a lifetime devoted to running for helping his stamina while guiding the country through the worst of the coronavirus pandemic.

Anthony Fauci, 80, who has led the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for 37 years, dispensed his health advice to reporter Jane Brody, an octogenarian who has written about health for The New York Times for 45 years.

“I think that the fact that I’ve been a marathon and 10K runner for the last multiple decades has been very important in by staying fit, looking fit and feeling fit,” said Fauci in a Zoom interview that was released Saturday. He added that he power walks up to four miles each evening to keep himself in shape.

Fauci’s advice for good health included eating healthy meals and getting enough sleep every night.

“Take care of yourself and get some reasonable sleep,” said Fauci. “Don’t get overcome by stress. Have a good diet. Don’t smoke, don’t drink too much.

At the beginning of the pandemic last year Fauci admitted that he was sometimes hard pressed to take his own advice, sleeping only four hours per night and not drinking enough water.
