The FBI has pushed out at least three senior officials involved in cases connected with the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot, telling them to leave by Friday without giving them a specific reason, The Post has confirmed.
Former FBI acting director Brian Driscoll; Steve Jensen, acting director in charge of the Washington Field Office; and special agent Walter Giardina are all getting forced out as part of a purge that is expected to include other key officials in the bureau.
Driscoll, who served as acting director before Kash Patel was confirmed earlier this year, revealed his firing in an email to employees reported by NBC.
Former FBI acting director Brian Driscoll is among those being forced out of the bureau. FBI“Last night I was informed that tomorrow will be my last day in the FBI. I understand that you may have a lot of questions regarding why, for which I currently have no answers. No cause has been articulated at this time,” he reportedly wrote in the missive.
“Please know that it has been the honor of my life to serve alongside each of you. Thank you for allowing me to stand on your shoulders throughout it all. Our collective sacrifices for those we serve is, and will always be, worth it. I regret nothing. You are my heroes, and I remain in your debt.”
Driscoll had come under fire from allies of President Trump earlier this year after aggressively pushing back against pressure to oust agents who had handled Capitol riot cases. He was fired just short of retirement and therefore isn’t able to collect a full pension, The Post was told.
Sources described Driscoll, a recipient of the FBI Medal of Valor and the FBI Shield of Bravery, as being “very well-respected” by his colleagues.
Giardina was involved in the contempt of Congress case against White House trade adviser Peter Navarro, who ultimately served four months behind bars after he spurned a subpoena from the House select committee investigating the riot.
For his work on the Navarro matter, Giardina had been in the crosshairs of Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), who said on the Senate floor in April that the case was the work of a “merry band of partisans” at the FBI.
Jensen, who helmed the Washington Field Office, is also believed to have been involved in the bureau’s investigations of the Capitol riot.
The FBI declined to comment when asked by The Post and it is unclear how many other FBI officials will be affected.
The FBI is also ousting Walter Giardina, a special agent who played a role in the investigation of Trump trade adviser Peter Navarro, and Steven Jensen, who played a key role in the January 6 investigations. James KeivomEarlier this year, FBI employees were required to answer a questionnaire detailing whether they played any part in probing the Capitol riot.
Last month, it emerged that then-Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove instructed employees to put together a list of personnel involved with Capitol riot cases.
Patel has vowed to end weaponization at the FBI and has fended off criticism and accusations from Democrats that he is eyeing retaliation against employees who opposed Trump.
“I have no interest, no desire and will not, if confirmed, go backwards,” Patel told senators in January during his confirmation hearing. “There will be no politicization at the FBI. There will be no retributive actions taken by any FBI, should I be confirmed as the FBI director.”
