The federal government is out of the Internet business.

The privately run Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers got the cyber keys Saturday when its contract with the US Commerce Department expired.

By letting the government’s ICANN contract run out, the Obama administration in effect handed over control of Internet domain names to the 20-year-old Los Angeles-based multinational group of scientists, engineers and foreign emissaries.

ICANN will now maintain databases ensuring the Internet’s stability and security on its own, without federal involvement.

Nothing should change for ordinary Web users.
