Federal officials have warned voters to be alert for Russian attempts to tamper with the election and urged law enforcement agencies to be vigilant for violence after a number of packages filled with pipe bombs were mailed to high-profile Democrats.
A mix of agencies — including the FBI, the Justice Department and Homeland Security — released an advisory Monday urging voters to be on guard against Election Day meddling.
“Americans should be aware that foreign actors — and Russia in particular — continue to try to influence public sentiment and voter perceptions through actions intended to sow discord,” the statement said, referring also to Iran and China.
The agencies said “foreign actors” can accomplish their goals by spreading false information about how to vote and on specific candidates, and by using social media to disseminate propaganda much as they did during the 2016 presidential election.
“The American public can mitigate these efforts by remaining informed, reporting suspicious activity, and being vigilant consumers of information,” the statement said.
A bulletin issued Nov. 1 by the FBI and Homeland Security to law enforcement agencies across the country warns of the “ongoing threat of violence” after the pipe-bomb mailings last month.
“Both domestic extremists and (radicalized jihadists) have previously targeted public events and government officials, and we remain concerned by the ongoing threat of lone offender violence,” the bulletin said, according to ABC.
Both advisories said there have not been any indications of violence or attacks on the voting systems that would prevent voting, change vote counts or hinder the ability to count ballots.
