The heartbroken family of a Nashville nurse who was fatally shot on her way to work says they’re struggling to comprehend how “somebody out there that could do this to her.”

“There’s nothing she could’ve done to ever bring this upon herself. She was a good person all around,” Kevin Eck, who is the fiancé of Caitlyn Kaufman’s cousin, told news station WTVF.

Kaufman, 26, was heading to an overnight shift Thursday to treat COVID-19 patients at St. Thomas West Hospital when her Mazda SUV was struck by gunfire on Interstate 440, the outlet reported.

She was discovered wounded by a patrol officer after she pulled over to the side of the highway, police said. He called for more help, but she died at the scene.

“We can’t understand how there is somebody out there that could do this to her. She loved what she did, being a nurse. She loved helping people,” Eck told WKRN.

No arrests have been made in the case, but Nashville Mayor John Cooper said police have made the investigation a priority, news station WSMV reported.

“As far as right now, we are just standing by and waiting,” Eck told news station WKRN.

“Just hoping that if there’s anybody out there that has any significant information, please come forward.”
