A military fighter jet crashed mysteriously in a Michigan forest during a training mission Tuesday — sparking a desperate search for the pilot, officials said.

The F-16 “viper” jet plunged to the ground around 8 p.m. in Delta County and the pilot’s whereabouts were unknown Wednesday morning, the Wisconsin Air National Guard said in a statement.

“Emergency responders are on scene. The cause of the crash, as well as the status of the pilot, are unknown at this time,” the aerial militia branch wrote on its Facebook page.

Rescue crews, including US Forest Service officers, pinpointed the crash site and a possible spot where the airman had been ejected, according to mlive.com.

The single-engine Fighting Falcon jet was assigned to the 115th Fighter Wing at Truax Field Air National Guard Base in Madison, and had been soaring over Michigan’s Upper Peninsula during a three-day training mission, the outlet reported.

“We are a close knit family and when an incident like this occurs, every member in our organization feels it,” Col. Bart Van Roo, a 115th Fighter Wing commander, said in a statement. “We will continue to pray for the pilot’s safe return.”

The incident is being investigated by the Wisconsin Air National Guard.
