A Florida fire chief who was accused of swiping COVID-19 vaccines has turned himself in to authorities, sheriff’s officials said.

Polk County Fire Rescue Capt. Anthony Damiano, 55, was arrested Wednesday on charges of falsifying an official record as a public servant and misdemeanor petit theft, according to a Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

The arrest comes after a former paramedic at the fire service, Joshua Colon, was also nabbed in connection to the three missing vials of the Moderna vaccine.

Colon told authorities that Damiano asked him to get vaccine doses for his mother.

He claimed that he initially refused to help, but Damiano threatened to report him for stealing and selling vaccines.

The next day, Cohen left three doses inside a refrigerator and was ordered by the captain to take a lunch break, authorities said. When he returned, the three doses were missing.

“Colon advised he did not question his supervisor in reference to the missing vaccines, however, he immediately became suspicious,” an affidavit says.

Investigators launched a probe earlier this month when a battalion chief noticed discrepancies in the paperwork.

During the investigation, detectives interviewed Colon at his lawyer’s office.

He allegedly admitted forging paperwork for the vaccines, using the names of one former firefighter and another fake name that resembled another former firefighter.

The firefighters were contacted during the investigation and each said they had not received the vaccine.

While at the lawyer’s office, Colon called the captain and they discussed the vaccine, authorities said.

The captain told him that doses were in a car parked outside a pal’s house in Saint Cloud, where authorities later recovered two vials, officials said.

The friend told authorities that Damiano told her that the vaccines were for his mom, who is elderly and sick, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

Investigators also interviewed Damiano’s mother, who told them that her son had told her he was waiting for a man to get her the appropriate paperwork for the vaccine.

She claimed she “never received the vaccine from anyone and she believed Anthony [was] attempting to help her obtain the vaccine legally,” the affidavit said.
