Flames ripped through a pier on San Francisco’s fabled Fisherman’s Wharf early Saturday, destroying a crab processing warehouse but sparing a historic World War II ship.

More than 150 firefighters responded to the pre-dawn fire, which covered the city in a cloud of smoke and haze. One suffered a severe cut to his hand, but no other injuries were reported, according to CNN. The cause of the blaze is being investigated.

A fireboat crew battled for hours to save the SS Jeremiah O’Brien, which took part in the Allied invasion of Normandy on D-Day in 1944, the local CBS affiliate reported. Firefighters also kept the fire from spreading to the USS Pamanito, which is also docked at Pier 45.

“When firefighters arrived, the flames were literally lapping over the Jeremiah O’Brien,” he said. “They literally saved the O’Brien.”

The warehouse was home to family-owned Caito Fisheries, a major processor for the Northern California crab fleet.

The building started to collapse not long after firefighters arrived, the CBS station reported. Officials closed off streets around the Fisherman’s Wharf neighborhood.
