A Miami cop rushed to the hospital in critical condition early Friday after his girlfriend, a former officer, shot him in the head, authorities said.
Veteran cop Damian Colon was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital after he was shot while off-duty in Hialeah by former Miami-Dade School officer Yessenia Sanchez, according to NBC 6.
He is currently listed in critical condition and Sanchez was taken into custody.
The cop was shot while he was off duty, in what is believed to be a domestic dispute.
Sanches had previously been hit with a domestic battery rap for a violent fight with Colon in 2021, the outlet reported.
In the incident, Sanchez was arguing with Colon, who she was living with at the time, over childcare when she threw a ceramic object at him, according to NBC.
Cops said Colon left the home, and that Sanchez called him to return. When he did, she brandished a gun and threatened to kill herself before attacking him, the report stated.

Sanchez resigned after the incident rather than face formal termination, NBC reported.
Miami-Dade police confirmed Friday’s shooting and officers massed at the hospital where Colon is being treated.
“One of our MDPD officers was shot off-duty in what appears to be a domestic incident,” the agency wrote on Twitter. “We ask for your prayers.”
