An attorney and head of a Florida city’s bar association was busted over the weekend after grabbing his wife by the neck, police said.

Gregory J. Hoag, a partner at Masterson, Hoag & Smith in St. Petersburg, was arrested late Saturday on a misdemeanor charge of domestic battery after police responded to his home when a dispute with his wife got physical, according to an arrest report obtained by the Tampa Bay Times.

Hoag, 41, who also serves as the president of the St. Petersburg Bar Association, started to push his wife and “became upset when she told him to stop,” according to the report. “[Hoag] grabbed the victim by the neck with his hands causing no visible injuries and not restricting airflow.”

Hoag’s wife had minor injuries to her right arm after the physical confrontation. Hoag was later arrested after leaving the couple’s St. Petersburg home in a vehicle, police said.

Hoag, who was released on his own recognizance, could not be reached for comment Tuesday. A message left at his practice specializing in medical/legal malpractice, wrongful death and personal injury was not immediately returned.

He was admitted to the Florida bar association in 2003 and grew up in the Sunshine State after being born in Manhasset, New York. Hoag and his wife, Erica, have one son, according to an online biography.

Hoag has previously been named as a top 40 attorney under 40 by the National Trial Lawyers Association and has been recognized as a top lawyer in Florida by The Legal Network, his bio states.
