A Florida mail carrier who was attacked and savagely mauled by a pack of five dogs has died, officials announced.
Pamela Jane Rock, 61, succumbed to her injuries at a hospital on Monday night, a day after the incident in Putnam County, sheriff’s Col. Joseph Wells said during a press conference on Tuesday.
“A postal family member lost her life in a dog bite attack. The US Postal Service is deeply saddened at the loss of our employee,” a spokesperson for the United States Postal Service said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and her co-workers at this time.”

The dogs have been seized and will be euthanized by animal control officials. Putnam County Sheriff's OfficeWells told reporters that the dogs that brutalized Rock have been identified by witnesses and will be euthanized by animal control officials.
He also said the dogs were mixed breed and that the sheriff’s office had responded four times in three years for incidents relating to vicious animals in the area where Sunday’s deadly mauling occurred.
At least two of the prior reports allegedly involved the dogs responsible for Rock’s death.
Officials said that Rock, who according to her family had just started working for the Postal Service in December, was delivering mail in rural Interlachen when her truck broke down.
Witnesses said they heard the woman screaming for help and saw the pack of canines biting her.
Several onlookers rushed to pull the dogs off of Rock, and one man fired a rifle into the air several times to scare them off, but they would not budge.
Deputies who were called to the scene found Rock bleeding profusely on the ground and administered first aid until an ambulance arrived to transport her to HCA Florida Putnam Hospital.
From there, the 61-year-old was airlifted to a trauma center in Gainesville in critical condition.
Rock’s niece told the station WTLV that doctors were forced to amputate her aunt’s arm in an unsuccessful attempt to save her life.
Rock was attacked in Interlachen, Florida, after her US Postal Service truck broke down on her route. WCJB-TVNeighbors in Interlachen said the dogs had been rampaging through the town for weeks.
Wells said it appears the dogs had been secured on the day of the attack, but managed to move some rocks that lined the fence on their owner’s property to keep them corralled and ended up escaping.
The sheriff’s office said the dogs’ owner, who was not named, has been cooperating with the investigation.

“How did it get so far?” she asked. “Why were so many dogs able to get to her? Where were the owners? Why were they not locked up?”
