A Florida man died after being electrocuted while walking through water at his home during Tropical Storm Eta, police said.
Bradenton Beach police Sgt. Lenard Diaz said the unidentified man was wading through water flooding his home around 5:40 p.m. Wednesday, apparently unaware that there was an appliance running at the time, news station WFLA reported.
“It was an accident. I’m sure he didn’t realize the appliance was plugged in or the appliance was underwater and that’s what happens, it’s a scary situation,” Diaz said.
A friend tried to save the man, but was unable to get to him without being electrocuted himself, Diaz added.
First responders had to wait for utility crews to shut off the power in the neighborhood so they could reach the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Tropical Storm Eta made landfall early Thursday near Cedar Key, Fla., with winds of 50 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center. Experts said the storm is expected to dump 20 to 25 inches of rain on the South Florida region.
The storm had already ripped through the Florida Keys and Miami on Monday before taking a second swipe at the state.
