DANIA BEACH, Fla. — Police in South Florida are searching for the person who fatally shot a 41-year-old attending an impromptu gathering to memorialize the life of a friend.

Broward sheriff’s spokeswoman Gina Carter told the Sun Sentinel that Freddy Calloway was struck by a blast of gunfire Friday night. He was among dozens of people who were remembering 55-year-old Percy Walker, who had died a week earlier.

She said the gunman approached the group about 10:30 p.m. and shot Calloway.

Carter said the deaths of Calloway and Walker aren’t related.

Detectives were asking witnesses to “come forward and help the victim’s family find justice.”

The motive for the shooting remained unclear. Carter said no one else was injured.

Dania Beach is near Fort Lauderdale.
