A mountain biker plunged to his death while riding along a cliff in Northern California, authorities said.

Alejandro Lugo of Florida had been biking on Butcher Trail when he fell over the side of a mountain Sunday east of Downieville, according to the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office.

Search crews were dispatched to rescue the biker, but they weren’t able to locate him until about 3 a.m. Monday, Plumas News reported.

However, due to the steepness of the mountain, they weren’t able to safely reach him, authorities said.

Later that day, they sent a Blackhawk rescue helicopter from Naval Station Fallon to hoist up his body from the bottom of the ravine.

No further details were released about the circumstances surrounding the incident.
