A Michigan woman was busted by police over the weekend for “stomping all over” a sea turtle’s nest in Miami Beach, authorities said.
Yaqun Lu, 41, was spotted by cops with a wooden stake in her hand “jabbing at the sea turtle nest and stomping all over the nest with her bare feet” on Saturday morning, the Miami Herald reported.
The nest was in an area of the beach that was closed off to the public and had a “Do Not Disturb” sign posted up.
“Thankfully, it appears the eggs were not damaged,” Miami Beach Police said in a tweet.
Lu, a Chinese citizen who lives in Hudsonville, MI, was arrested and charged with molesting or harassing marine turtles or their eggs, according to the Miami Herald.
She was taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center and was being held on $5,000 bail.
The Chinese consulate in Houston was notified of Lu’s arrest, the news outlet reported.
Sea turtles are federally protected by the US Endangered Species Act of 1973 and under Florida laws it is illegal to harm the animals, their offspring or nests.
Nesting season for sea turtles runs from May 1 through October 31, according to the Miami Beach Police.
