A Fort Bliss private is being court-martialed for sexually assaulting a 19-year-old fellow soldier who was later found dead in their Texas base, the Army said.

The unidentified private first class was notified late Friday that they were being arraigned before a military judge sometime this week, Fort Bliss spokeswoman Lt. Col. Allie Payne said in a release.

The charges are for the alleged sexual assault of Asia Graham, a fellow private first class who was found dead in her barracks on New Year’s Eve, the Army said.

The referral of charges to the court martial was “personally ordered” by Maj. Gen. Sean Bernabe, commander of the 1st Armored Division at Fort Bliss, Payne said.

Graham notified military officials on June 1 that she’d been sexually assaulted, launching a months-long military investigation, The Charlotte Observer said. Investigators in October found probable cause that a fellow soldier sexually assaulted her.

The North Carolina native was found dead in her barracks on New Year’s Eve, according to Army officials who have said no foul play is suspected.

Her family has continued pressing for answers, however, with her mother, Nicole Graham, telling WBTV that “the leadership failed her.”
