Liar, liar — hair on fire?

That’s the accusation flaring up across social media after Gov. Gavin Newsom claimed in a resurfaced interview that his trademark slick-back hair burst into flames while surveying the damage of the Palisades Fire earlier this year in Los Angeles.

“I was up there in the hills with these guys when we all turned around — when my hair literally burst. There’s a video of it,” Newsom said. “And they threw me in the car and a guy hits my hair, and throws me in the car and says, ‘Get the fuck out of here!’”

The Palisades Fire ignited the morning of Jan. 7  in the Santa Monica Mountains and burned more than 23,000 acres before it was fully contained, according to CAL FIRE.

A spokesperson for Newsom said the governor got into the hairy situation that same day at about 2:21 p.m. near the intersection of South Surfview Dr. and Blue Sail Drive in the Pacific Palisades.

The governor’s office also provided The Post with video, but the footage didn’t capture the alleged moment Newsom’s mane was inflamed.

Nick Schuler, a CAL FIRE deputy director, is seen standing next to Newsom in the video.

Schuler told the Post they were only on the scene for roughly five minutes when embers started to rain down and strong winds began to push trash cans along the road.

“Embers were beginning to cast down and catch palm trees on fire and as I was talking with him, one went into his hair,” Schuler said.

“That’s when I smacked or brushed it out of his hair. What he said about his hair being about to catch fire was accurate.”

A final damage assessment attributed the blaze to arson, reporting that it killed 12 people, injured four, and destroyed 6,837 structures while damaging another 973.

Newsom declared a state of emergency the day of the fire.

The Eaton Fire, which started later that day, killed 19 people, injured nine firefighters and destroyed more than 9,400 structures.

Newsom’s comments were made during his July appearance on the Shawn Ryan Show, but they’re now sparking a new round of memes following Newsom’s “testicle crushing” sitting pose last week in an interview at the New York Times Dealbook Summit.

Kevin Dalton, a frequent poster on X, created an AI-generated video in which Newsom’s hair bursts into flames before he dives into a limo.

The Orange County Republican Party tweeted: “Newsom claims that his hair caught on fire and there’s video of it? Release the Newsom Hair Files!”

Ross Gerber, a seven-year resident of the Palisades who nearly saw his home destroyed by the fires, said he was on the scene when the fires broke out and doubted Newsom’s claims.

“It’s infuriating to me that I almost died fighting the fire near my house,” he said, adding that the governor’s command post was set up not far from his home.

“I didn’t see him go anywhere near the fire. This is absurd,” Gerber said.

“On the other side of the coin, these firefighters are the best. They came from every state and every city. These guys are the true heroes.”
