Legendary actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were likely dead for several days — possibly even “a couple of weeks” — by the time they were found in their home by a maintenance worker, the sheriff of Santa Fe County, New Mexico, revealed.

“It’s very difficult to put a timeline together even with the help of the office of the medical investigator,” Sheriff Adan Mendoza said on the “Today” show Friday morning.

“Just based on their body and other evidence on the body, it looked — it appears [that they were deceased for] several days, even up to a couple of weeks.”

Hackman, 95, and his wife, 65, were found in separate rooms of their multimillion-dollar home on Wednesday along with one of their dogs.

Arakawa, who was discovered surrounded by prescription pills, had “obvious signs of death, body decomposition, bloating in her face and mummification in both hands and feet” when she was found on the floor of a bathroom near the home’s entry, police wrote in an affidavit.

Hackman was located near a pair of sunglasses in what deputies believe was the home’s mudroom.

Officers wrote in the report that it appeared he had “suddenly fallen.”

Hackman’s body had “obvious signs of death, similar and consistent with the female decedent,” police wrote in the report. 

Workers in the couple’s gated community said they hadn’t seen the pair in about two weeks.

Authorities deemed the deaths “suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation” after finding the door to the couple’s home was ajar — although there was no sign of forced entry or theft.

There were additionally no signs of external trauma on either of their bodies, police said.

Mendoza said Friday that investigators are tracking down those who may have spoken with the couple in their final days — however, that has proved difficult due to Hackman and Arakawa’s highly private lifestyle.

The sheriff said it remains unclear whether they died in the over $3 million house around the same time — a key clue Mendoza authorities are looking to nail down.

“There’s no indication that anybody was moving about the house or doing anything different, so it’s very hard to determine if they both passed at the same time or how close they passed together,” he said. 

“We’re trying to put that information together … and I think the autopsy report is going to be key to this investigation.”

Appearing beside Mendoza, Santa Fe Fire Chief Brian Moya said on “Today” that some type of gas or chemical leak could “possibly” have been a factor — as Hackman’s daughter Elizabeth Jean Hackman had suggested.

“That was a home with natural gas in it, so it could have [played a factor in their deaths],” Moya said. “There’s a lot of unanswered [questions] there. When we arrived, we made sure our people as well as the sheriff were safe, and there was nothing that we found. We also went back again yesterday to do another round of searches … and we didn’t find anything as well.”
