Gene Hackman’s wife, Betsy Arakawa, had researched COVID symptoms and considered seeking medical care for her husband in the days before she died, an investigation by New Mexico officials revealed.
The investigation report obtained by TMZ revealed new details about what Arakawa did between Feb. 8 and 12 — the day she likely succumbed to a rare, rodent-borne illness, leaving her ailing husband alone and helpless.

Internet browsing history, call logs, voicemails, and security footage from stores Arakawa visited showed that she had researched whether COVID could cause symptoms like nosebleeds and dizziness.

The home’s trash showed evidence of Arakawa’s concern about COVID. Santa Fe Sheriff's OfficeArakawa gave her husband a COVID test, which came back negative, and she purchased several Boost Oxygen canisters, the report says.
She also emailed her masseuse for advice about whether to get him outside medical treatment, and her final internet search on Feb. 12 was for Santa Fe health care providers, the report said.
Betsy Arakawa died of hantavirus, while husband Gene Hackman died from advanced Alzheimer’s and heart disease a week later. APAuthorities believe Arakawa died of hantavirus shortly after making the search and that Hackman died one week later — around Feb. 17 or 18 — from his advanced Alzheimer’s disease and heart complications.
