He’s saving democracy once again. We’re all so excited to do whatever we can to support Vice President Harris in her historic quest,” Clooney told CNN in a statement Tuesday.
What to know about President Biden's decision to drop out of the 2024 presidential race:
- President Biden announced Sunday he is dropping out of the 2024 presidential race — after weeks of prominent Democrats and donors calling on him to withdraw following his disastrous performance in the first presidential debate.
- In a letter posted on X Sunday afternoon, Biden admitted that it is in the “best interest of my party and country” for him to step down as the Democratic nominee.
- Biden wrote that he intends to serve out the remainder of his term and will address the country on his decision later this week.
- In a follow-up X post, Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the suddenly open Democratic nomination. “Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year,” the president wrote.
- Former President Donald Trump reacted to the news by labeling Biden the “worst president in the history of our country” in a call with CNN.
The 63-year-old actor’s endorsement comes nearly two weeks after he called for a new candidate in an op-ed published in the New York Times — and less than a month after he co-hosted a Biden fundraiser that brought in some $30 million.

The appearance was on the heels of his catastrophic debate performance against former President Donald Trump, and both events led to mounting calls from within Biden’s own party, and even Hollywood elites, to step aside.
In his scathing op-ed, Clooney noted, “I love Joe Biden. As a senator. As a vice president and as president. I consider him a friend, and I believe in him. Believe in his character. Believe in his morals.”

“But the one battle he cannot win is the fight against time,” Clooney went on. “None of us can.”
“It’s devastating to say it, but the Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago at the fund-raiser was not the Joe ‘big F-ing deal’ Biden of 2010,” he added. “He wasn’t even the Joe Biden of 2020. He was the same man we all witnessed at the debate.”
Clooney co-hosted a Biden fundraiser that brought in some $30 million. APThe staunch Democrat also called out party leaders on Capitol Hill, who Clooney said “need to stop telling us that 51 million people didn’t see what we just saw” at the CNN debate June 27.
“We are not going to win in November with this president,” the actor bluntly said.
