Derek Chauvin was seriously injured after being stabbed in federal prison by a fellow inmate, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison confirmed Saturday.

“I am sad to hear that Derek Chauvin was the target of violence,” Ellison said. “He was duly convicted of his crimes and, like any incarcerated individual, he should be able to serve his sentence without fear of retaliation or violence.”

The disgraced cop, who is serving 22.5 years for the May 2020 death of George Floyd, should be able to serve his prison stint “without fear of retaliation or violence,” Ellison told The Washington Post through a spokesman.

Chauvin, 47, was attacked around 12:30 p.m. at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson. The Bureau of Prisons has not identified the attacker.

Chauvin was later listed in “stable” condition and is expected to survive, sources told ABC News.

The Bureau of Prisons has not identified the attacker.

Prison employees performed “life-saving measures” before Chauvin was hospitalized, the federal agency said.

Chauvin’s attacker was also taken to a hospital for treatment.

No employees were injured and the FBI was notified, the Bureau of Prisons said.

Visiting at the facility has been suspended.

The prison has a violent history.

In Noveber 2022, an inmate pulled a gun and tried to shoot a visitor in the head — but failed when the weapon misfired.

In May 2018, disgraced former Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar was assaulted at the same prison –and subsequently transferred out.

Nassar was assaulted again in a Florida federal penitentiary in July.

The stabbing in Arizona comes just one week after the US Supreme Court rejected Chauvin’s appeal of his second-degree murder conviction.

Chauvin claimed new evidence shows he didn’t cause Floyd’s death, which sparked riots across the country and a prolonged debate on race relations in the US.

The attack on Chauvin also comes less than a week after the release of a new, crowdfunded documentary, “The Fall of Minneapolis,” that alleged the narrative surrounding Floyd’s death was a lie.

The film was produced by Liz Collin, a former anchor at a CBS affiliate in the Twin Cities who was taken off air during the riots and demoted because her husband, Bob Kroll, was the Minneapolis police union chief at the time.

Chauvin’s lawyers argued that he was denied a fair trial due to the publicity surrounding the case and concerns about potential violence if he was acquitted.

They had advocated for keeping his client out of the prison’s general population and away from other inmates, anticipating he’d be a target.
