The former cardiologist for George H.W. Bush — who was fatally shot while riding his bike to work last week — was likely the victim of a targeted attack, the Houston police chief said Wednesday.

Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo told The Post that it is “highly probable” Dr. Mark Hausknecht was intentionally killed by another cyclist while biking to Houston Methodist Hospital on Friday.

The suspect was riding on the opposite side of the street and fired a number of shots at Hausknecht before fleeing, police said.

Acevedo said they were still working to establish a motive.

A motive for the crime is not known.

Former president Bush released a statement about Hausknecht’s death through his spokesman on Friday.

“Mark was a fantastic cardiologist and a good man,” read the statement.

“I will always be grateful for his exceptional, compassionate care. His family is in our hearts.”
