An 11-year-old Georgia boy was fatally shot on his way home from helping his best friend’s grandmother decorate for Christmas, police said.
Tyrell Sims was walking with the pal after putting up a Christmas tree in East Point when gunshots rang out from a black car on Friday evening, news station WSB-TV reported.
Both boys dropped down to the pavement to try to shield themselves, but when the friend got up, he realized that Tyrell was unresponsive, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
“He jumped up and tried to shake my son. My son didn’t get up,” his father, Conrad Sims, told WSB-TV.
The father said he heard the gunfire, but didn’t realize that his son was in the crossfire.
“The guy came running in and told me, ‘Your son was shot!’” the father said.
“I just started running, jumped in the car, tried to resuscitate him. I tried to bring him back. I believe I did all I could.”
The fifth-grader was brought with a gunshot wound to the head to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
Police said they’re investigating the fatal shooting, but no motive has been released.
“It appears that the 11-year-old was just an innocent bystander,” Capt. Allyn Glover said.
No arrests have been made in the case, but authorities said they would like to speak to two men who are persons of interest, WSB-TV reported.
