Democrats in Georgia released a list of the five finalists in the running to replace Rep. John Lewis, who died last Friday, on November’s ballot.
The death of Lewis, 80, of pancreatic cancer, left Democrats without a candidate in the 5th Congressional District, and 131 people rushed to meet Sunday evening’s deadline to apply.
A seven-person committee that included Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms and former Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams pared that list of prospects down to five finalists.
They are: state Sen. Nikema Williams, state Rep. Park Cannon, Georgia NAACP President James Woodall, Atlanta city councilman Andre Dickens and former president of Morehouse College in Atlanta Robert Franklin.
The state Democratic’s executive committee will consider the five before announcing its selection.
Lewis, first elected to Congress in 1986, defeated challenger Barrington Martin II with 87 percent of the vote in June.
The Democratic candidate will face off against Republican Angela Stanton-King.
President Trump in February commuted the sentence of Stanton-King, a former reality show star,
for her part in a stolen vehicle ring.
