As Hurricane Irma churns toward the US with 175-mph winds, Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal issued a mandatory evacuation order for areas along the coast, including the city of Savannah.
“I encourage all Georgians in our coastal areas that could be impacted by this storm to evacuate the area as soon as possible,” said Deal, who also activated up to 5,000 National Guard members in his state.
The evacuation order, which takes effect Saturday, includes Chatham County and some areas west of I-95, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
