Day 7 of Maxwell trial ends in tears

By Ben Feuerherd and Tamar Lapin

Day 7 of Ghislaine Maxwell's trial ended dramatically, with an alleged victim, Carolyn, sobbing on the stand.

The breakdown followed a grueling cross-examination by Maxwell's defense attorney, Jeffrey Pagliuca, who quizzed her for hours about apparent inconsistencies in her story.

Prosecutors then came back to ask Carolyn clarifying questions about her age and the year when she met Maxwell and Jeffrey Epstein, at which point she began bawling.

Asked if she had any financial interest in testifying, Carolyn said strongly: "No."

"Money will not ever fix what that woman has done to me," she said.

We'll be back tomorrow morning.

Government expects to rest its case this week

By Ben Feuerherd and Tamar Lapin

Federal prosecutors told Judge Alison Nathan that the government expects to rest its case against Ghislaine Maxwell this week.

Proceedings are moving faster than expected, with prosecutors previously saying it would take three weeks to present their case, not two. The trial was anticipated to last six weeks total.

Prosecutors said they will not be calling a witness named Brian after it was revealed he spoke to another witness, his sister “Jane,” who was the first of Maxwell’s accusers to testify.

Alleged Maxwell victim Carolyn breaks down on stand

By Ben Feuerherd and Tamar Lapin

Ghislaine Maxwell accuser Carolyn broke down on the stand as she recalled massaging Jeffrey Epstein more than 100 times — and how “something sexual happened every single time.”

The woman, who is only being identified by her first name, also recalled how Maxwell allegedly groped her when she was just 14 years old.

“She came in and felt my boobs and my hips and my buttocks,” Carolyn said, her voice breaking as she recalled being fondled after undressing for one of the sexual Epstein massages. Read more here.

Lunch break

We'll be on lunch break for about the next hour.

When we come back, Carolyn, the next alleged victim on the stand, will continue to be cross-examined by Maxwell's defense attorney.

The judge is also expected to decide if a witness named Brian will be allowed to take the stand, after the court found out he spoke to another witness, his sister "Jane," who was the first of Maxwell's accusers to testify.

Next alleged victim, Carolyn, takes the stand

By Ben Feuerherd and Tamar Lapin

A woman going by her first name, Carolyn, for privacy reasons, is testifying about some of the "over 100" sexualized massages she gave Jeffrey Epstein between the ages of 14 and 18.

"Something sexual happened every single time," said Carolyn, one of the victims in the indictment against Maxwell.

Wearing a magenta and white striped blouse, her straight brown hair parted in the middle, the alleged victim choked up several times as she described the abuse.

"A lot of them run together," she said of the encounters.

Document from hard drive described Epstein-Maxwell relationship

By Ben Feuerherd and Tamar Lapin

A document created by a user "Gmax" that was recovered from a hard drive at Jeffrey Epstein's Upper East Side mansion described a rosy relationship between the disgraced financier and Maxwell, an FBI employee testified Tuesday.

"Jeffrey and Ghislaine have been together as a couple for the last 11 years. They are, contrary to what many people think, rarely apart. I almost always see them together," the document, which was created on Oct. 14, 2002, began.

"Ghislaine is highly intelligent and great company, with a ready smile and infectious laugh," it continued, FBI analyst Stephen Flatley said.

It was not clear why the document was created or what purpose it served.

Jurors shown photos of Maxwell rubbing Epstein's feet

By Ben Feuerherd and Tamar Lapin

Jurors were shown a number of photos of Ghislaine Maxwell and Jeffrey Epstein together Tuesday morning -- including two shots that showed Maxwell spilling out of a skimpy top while rubbing Epstein's feet aboard an airplane.

The photos were identified by FBI analyst Kimberly Meder, who said she reviewed them after CDs that contained the images were taken from Epstein Upper East Side mansion during a law enforcement raid in 2019.

Other photos shown included one of Epstein holding Maxwell from behind while speaking on the phone. Another shows them posing on a grassy field with a golden retriever in between them.

'Jane' spoke to other witness, called defense attorney c-word

By Ben Feuerherd and Tamar Lapin

"Jane," the first accuser who testified at trial spoke to another witness and called one of Maxwell's defense attorneys an expletive that rhymes with "front," it was revealed in court Tuesday.

The issue was raised by defense attorney Laura Menninger before the jury was brought into the courtroom Tuesday morning. Prosecutors told the defense team about the call between Jane and the witness, her brother Brian, after they were made aware of it early Tuesday morning.

Jane told Brian she was shown an Interlochan Arts Camp application during her testimony and also reffered to a defense attorney as the expletive, prosecutor Alison Moe said.

"Part of my concern is that those are the two things that Brian volunteered to them. They don’t know exactly what happened in this conversation," Menninger said.
