As Google goes, so goes the world’s Web traffic.
Google went dark for five minutes on Friday — slashing global Web traffic by 40 percent and causing a short-lived worldwide freak-out, according to CNet.com.
Google crashed from 6:52 p.m. to about 6:57 p.m. — enough time for deprived computer buffs to vent on social media.
“Google’s down everybody panic,” tweeted tech blogger Justin Pot.
Writer Vanessa Schneider quipped, “Google is down? Did we reach the edge of the Internet?”
Some West Coasters who were still in the office when the outage hit used it as an excuse to start the weekend early.
“Can we go home, then?” one worker tweeted.
Other techies suggested using the less-popular search engines Bing and Yahoo, but their entreaties didn’t catch on.
The outage also shut down Google services such as Gmail and YouTube.
A Google rep said the company has resolved the glitch.
“As Internet users, our reliance on google.com being up is huge. It’s also of note that page views spiked shortly afterwards, as users managed to get to their destination,” noted an analyst from the Web-tracking firm GoSquared.
