Rep. Paul Ryan was unanimously nominated Tuesday to serve again as House speaker in a display of Republican unity as Donald Trump prepares to assume the presidency.

Ryan, who at times during the campaign appeared to be a reluctant Trump supporter, met last week with the president-elect for lunch and a tour of the Capitol.

In the first explicit sign that the Trump administration will support Ryan, incoming White House chief of staff Reince Priebus, currently chair of the Republican

National Committee, tweeted, “Congratulations to my good friend @PRyan on his unanimous re-election as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives!”

“Welcome to the dawn of a new unified Republican government,” Ryan told reporters.

Trump’s red “Make America Great Again” hats were given out to every member at the House GOP meeting and many walked out wearing them

The conservative House Freedom Caucus has been critical of Ryan’s leadership since he took over in the fall of 2015, but didn’t field a challenger to Ryan.s.
