More Americans are ready to support stricter gun laws after the Newtown massacre, a poll reveals.

As President Obama and Congress weigh new gun restrictions, the Gallup poll found 62 percent of respondents support a law to ban the sale and possession of ammunition clips that contain more than 10 bullets.

Fifty-eight percent said they support toughening laws covering gun sales — up from 43 percent last year.

Overall, 47 percent favor passing new gun laws — a record high, up from 35 percent in 2011.

Ninety-two percent want background checks before a customer can buy a gun at a gun show.

But 51 percent oppose a ban on assault rifles; 44 percent support it.

And a record high of 74 percent oppose a handgun ban. The 24 percent in favor of such a ban represents the lowest level of support for the issue since Gallup began polling on it more than 50 years ago.

The poll was taken from Dec. 19 to 22.
