A Dallas man shot a paramedic and a neighbor Monday morning — and was found dead hours later inside a nearby home with another deceased person, officials said Monday.
Dallas police and members of Dallas Fire-Rescue were called to the scene of a shooting around 11:30 a.m. Monday on Reynolds Avenue near Dolphin Road and Interstate 30, according to police.
The shooting stemmed from a dispute between neighbors that had “escalated,” Dallas police Chief David Pughes said.
The injured paramedic was the first person to arrive at the shooting scene — and as he was treating the wounded civilian in the street, the gunman opened fire on him, police said.
“During this time, the suspect, approached the area then opened fire; ultimately a EMT paramedic was wounded,” the City of Dallas wrote in a statement.
A police officer was also injured as he jumped into the fray and pulled the paramedic to safety in his squad car.
“We believe … as a result of those actions that paramedic’s life was saved,” Pughes said.
The shooting sparked a massive manhunt that ended several hours later when the gunman was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside a nearby home, authorities said. Another individual was also found dead inside the house.
The paramedic was rushed to Baylor Medical Center, where he underwent surgery and is in critical but stable condition, according to The Dallas Morning News. The initial shooting victim is in stable condition.
“@DallasFireRes_q confirming 1 paramedic shot while responding to a call. No detail at this time. Thoughts and prayers are with all impacted,” tweeted Dallas Fire-Rescue.
Earlier in the day, police said they were searching for a bald black male wearing a green shirt and jeans. Residents in the area were told to take cover.
