A deadly blast at a Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon was caused by exploding oxygen bottles — and not arms, Hamas militants said Saturday.
Hamas in a statement rejected Lebanese state media reports that blamed an explosion Friday on arms stored at the Burj Shamali camp in southern Lebanon.
“Hamas condemns the misleading media campaign and the spread of false news that accompanied the incident,” the terrorist organization said, adding that reports of the “deaths of dozens” were also false.
The group — long behind rocket and bomb attacks inside Israel — described the blasts as an “incident” that was caused by an electrical short-circuit in a storage area for oxygen and gas bottles.
Hamas said that the bottles had been in the warehouse to treat COVID-19 patients.
Some damage was caused by the fire from the explosion, but the losses were limited, the group said.
Lebanese state media, however, reported that the blasts killed and injured an unspecified number of people.
Lebanon deployed troops to the camps and officials said they were investigating.
