Heavy storms, packing strong winds and large amounts of rainfall, slammed into Louisiana and Oklahoma on Thursday, killing one person and injuring several others, authorities said.

A pickup truck in Baton Rouge stalled in flood waters Thursday morning, and the driver got out and tried to wade through the water to safety, a local NBC affiliate reported.

The driver sustained an unknown injury during the process, and he died at a nearby hospital, Mayor Sharon Weston Broome said at a press conference.

“Our community experienced a flash flood overnight and into the morning today, experiencing more rainfall than was originally forecast,” Broome said at the press conference.

“We unfortunately had a confirmed fatality associated with the weather we’ve experienced today,” she added.

About 25 miles south of Baton Rouge, where a tornado touched down at about 9:30 a.m., five people were rushed to a hospital after being injured in the extreme weather at an ExxonMobil pipeline plant, a local ABC affiliate reported.

Further north in Oklahoma City, dozens of roads were flooded as heavy rains pounded the area.

First responders made more than 20 water rescues from cars on flooded roadways that left drivers stranded.

No deaths or other serious injuries were reported in the city.
