Former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper beat freshman Republican Sen. Cory Gardner and became the first candidate to flip a Senate seat for Democrats on Tuesday, according to a projection by Fox News.

The unofficial results in the closely watched race could narrow to three the number of additional seats that Democrats need to capture to regain control of the Senate.

But Sen. Doug Jones (D-Ala.) is widely considered vulnerable to his Republican challenger, former Auburn University football coach Tommy Tuberville.
